What is Physical AI? How it differs from Industrial AI

Physical AI perceives and acts in the physical world. Explore how it differs from Industrial AI, examples from industry and the role of a secure software and data layer.

Physical AI refers to AI systems that perceive their physical surroundings, reason about them and act within them. NVIDIA uses the term for autonomous machines such as robots and vehicles. So it is not just about software that generates text or analyses a chart. It connects perception with physical action.

There is no universally agreed definition that every supplier uses in the same way. Always look at what a system actually does. Connecting a sensor to a dashboard does not make that dashboard Physical AI. Conventional automation and digital twins are not automatically AI either.

Physical AI versus Industrial AI

Industrial AI describes the application area: artificial intelligence for industrial processes and tasks. Physical AI is more about how a system behaves: perceiving and acting in the physical world. The two can overlap. An autonomous robot in a factory can be both; an assistant that summarises a maintenance manual is Industrial AI without taking physical action itself.

A model that flags a quality risk based on machine data is not necessarily Physical AI either. It supports a human decision. The difference is not just where the data comes from, but above all who or what is responsible for the action that follows.

Examples and boundaries

A robot that uses cameras to recognise objects and adjust its movements is a typical example of Physical AI. Autonomous vehicles that interpret their surroundings also fall under the term. These are examples from the field, not completed projects or products offered by Vlegel.

Computer vision, simulation and robotics can come together on the shop floor. Simulations help train and test behaviour, but do not prove that a system will operate safely in every real-world situation. Changing lighting, unfamiliar objects, sensor failures and people nearby all require specific validation and an explicit safety design.

Where the software and data layer matters

Machines, sensors and business software need to exchange data with consistent meaning. OPC UA can make structured machine data accessible; MQTT can distribute readings and events. A UNS provides shared naming. A semantic model adds context such as machine, location, product, timestamp and unit.

This data layer is useful even without autonomous systems. It helps operators and analytics work from the same picture and prevents a model from misinterpreting an isolated reading. Network segmentation, access rights and logging need to be designed separately; a protocol or shared namespace is not a security boundary in itself.

What Vlegel does and does not do

Vlegel builds software for the physical world: machine integrations, data layers, operational apps and Industrial AI that helps people interpret data. Think maintenance alerts, quality analysis or an assistant that cites its sources. We do not build machines or claim to provide autonomous robot control.

Our AI reads data under controlled access and offers advice. It has no direct access to change machine settings. Deterministic control software is a separate discipline with its own requirements; AI output is not used as control or safety logic. A person reviews the sources and decides on actions that have an impact.

Start with your process, not the label

Which task do you want to improve: investigating a fault, inspecting a product or moving materials? Define who decides, what data is available and what should happen when things go wrong. Sometimes a fixed rule or a standard solution is a better fit than AI. Where physical autonomy is needed, the right robotics and safety partners are essential.
